Generative AI

When can I use GenAI?

These questions will guide you in determining whether or not use is acceptable:

At Fleming you require explicit permission from your instructor to use GenAI in your course. To determine if you have permission, check the following:

  • Course Outline: Your course outlines should clearly indicate if GenAI is permitted and under what circumstances it is or is not permitted.
  • Ask you Instructor: Whenever you are unclear ask your instructor.

If you do not have explicit permission do not use GenAI.

If you do have explicit permission go on to the next question.

Permission to use GenAI may vary from assignment to assignment in a course. In one assignment you may be able to use it as a brainstorming tool, in another you may be instructed not to use it at all.

Read your assignment instructions carefully and only use GenAI where and how it is explicitly noted. If you are unsure contact your instructor before using it.

If your instructions do not allow GenAI then do not use GenAI.

If your instructions allow GenAI then go on to the next question.

GenAI tools are everywhere. Before using you should always consider whether or not the use of GenAI is appropriate. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Consider the limitations of GenAI. Acknowledging these limitations is there still value in using GenAI for this assignment? If the limitations will take away from the output provided it may not be the right decision to use it.
  • Use: How we use GenAI typically determines if it is an effective tool or if it is impacting our learning. Is the way you intend to use it listed as an opportunity? If this is not an opportunity, then it may not be the right decision to use it.
  • Objectives: Does the use of GenAI for this assignment take away from the learning objectives? For instance, are you having GenAI write material you are required to write yourself or are you using it to improve your grammar?

If you have considered these potential issues and still feel using GenAI will not impact your learning, then go to the next question.

As noted in this guide, one of the limitations of GenAI is that it may provide false or inaccurate information. You must always evaluate the output thoroughly before using any information generated by GenAI.

Learn more about evaluating GenAI output here.

If you have verified the output for accuracy then go on to the next question.

It is important to maintain the integrity of your work by clearly including information about how and when you have used GenAI in your process.

  • Keep records: Ensure you keep records of all prompts, outputs and revisions of your work.
  • Check instructions: Some instructors may provide specific guidance on how they would like you to document the use of GenAI. Follow directions provided.
  • Citations: Include citations as appropriate by following the guidance here on citing GenAI.

If you have cited and documented how and where you have used GenAI then you are ready to review your assignment and hand in for grading.
